Dear Printmakers

2009 has been a wonderful year with a growing interest in the non-toxic printmaking techniques – especially in France, Italy and Turkey. I am constantly trying to convince the hardcore "toxic printmakers" to change, not only because of the obvious health and environmental benefits, but also because our approach to printmaking offers a lot of new and interesting possibilities in the artworks, that were simply not possible to obtain with the traditional printmaking techniques and materials. So I am constantly testing new materials and equipment in order to find the best and cheapest solutions for our purpose.

In the following I have summed up the most important events and advices that happened in 2009 – all based on demands or relevant questions from printmakers around the world.

MY HOMEPAGE

New language version on my website. My website has now been updated with a complete French version see: http://www.grafiskeksperimentarium.dk/fr/index.html

MY BOOKS

"Manual de Grabado No-Tóxco" 2nd edition expected in January 2010

The 1st edition of the Spanish version of my "Handbook of Non-Toxic Intaglio" published by the University in Granada is sold out. The new updated 2nd edition will be published by myself in mid February 2010 with the title: "Manual de Grabado No Tóxico".

PHOTOGRAVURE

Photopolymer Film – Calibration of the Different Positives – Exposure Times

I have updated my website with a guide "How to calibrate the positives to the film and exposure unit?" http://www.grafiskeksperimentarium.dk/en/Products/About_photopolymer_film.html

Using the DK-3 Photopolymer Film I now publish the correct exposure times for halftones, continuous tones and the aquatint screen for the two different UV light sources: the Phillips HPR UV light bulb and the Osram Vitalux UV light bulb. http://www.grafiskeksperimentarium.dk/en/Products/Photopolymer_Film.html

New ways of exposing the positives to the photopolymer film

Tests have convinced me that if you expose your continuous tone positive to the photopolymer film first and expose the aquatint screen afterwards you will get far more details in the final print than you would if you expose the aquatint screen before the positive.

Printers for halftones

Almost every week I get questions from printmakers looking for a cheap printer that is able to print good halftones. They are difficult to find in the cheap end nowadays – on www.posjet.com you will find some guys who have been aware of our problem for a long time. They have specialized in selling the two well working Epson Printers Stylus Color 1520 and 3000 cheap and refurbished.

Last month I saw very good results with the HP Officejet K7100. Unfortunately HP stopped producing this model, but you might still be able to find it new or used.

I would like to make a list of well working ink jet printers for half tones on my website – so if you have one that works for this purpose please send me a mail with the name and model.

On the other site you only need a printer for halftones if you want to etch your photogravures – if you only want to make a perfect photogravure then make a continuous tone positive with the following corrections:

1. make it 100% in gray scale as if you would print a photo on paper

2. When you have made your adjustments in Photoshop levels and you are happy with the photo you have on the screen, then (and that is important) lower the contrast in the image by moving the gamma slider in the center (in levels) to the left to about 1,50. The image on the screen gets paler but the final result after UV exposure, development and printing is often better than what you get from a half tone positive.

3. Remember to expose the continuous tone photograph to the plate first and then the aquatint screen afterwards. (see exposure times on: http://www.grafiskeksperimentarium.dk/en/Products/Photopolymer_Film.html

SECOND HAND

If you are interested I have an almost new Polymetaal HPV 60 Etching Press for sale see: http://www.grafiskeksperimentarium.dk/en/Second_Hand.html

SHOP – NEW PRICES

I have done some good deals with some of my suppliers – the new updated and often lower prices you can see on my website (Aguatint Screens, Transparent film, Badger Aguatint, Compressor for Air-Brush): http://www.grafiskeksperimentarium.dk/en/Materials.html

WORKSHOPS

My next workshops in my paradise in Spain will take place in July and August 2010 . If you are already interested, please send me an email. See: http://www.grafiskeksperimentarium.dk/en/Workshops.html

ACRYLIC ETCHING GROUNDS

I am often asked why I am not selling the "Lascaux" etching grounds. My answer is clear. Apart from the ones that in my opinion are not living up to the professional standards for printmaking

1. It would be impossible to sell etching grounds that has to be removed with Lascaux Remover or Mystrol when these products are not available in supermarkets in a lot of EU countries.

2. Lascaux Remover or Mystrol is too expensive to send by post because of the weight.

3. Compared to soda (that you can get everywhere) they are expensive and we all have soda "in the house" for working with photopolymer film.

4. Apart from these hard facts, for me it has always been important to reduce the amount of materials in the printmaking studio to the fewest, best working, cheapest and less toxic.

Newsletter No 8/December 2008

Dear Printmakers,
Since I published my last newsletter in December 2007 I finally received my new Handbook of Non-Toxic Intaglio, this time in a French edition: "La Gravure Non-Toxique - Manuel practique" - I am very happy, it took time but it was worth waiting for - the result is just as beautiful as I hoped thanks to the publisher Filip Le Roy in Belgium. The book is now available in Danish, Flemish/Dutch, English, Spanish and French language versions.

PUBLICATIONS

1.       La Gravure Non-Toxique - Manuel practique

Euro 24,00 + VAT (in Europe)

The French edition is based on the 2nd edition of the Handbook of Non-Toxic Intaglio published in Denmark 2008. The translation was made by Filip Le Roy and Jean-Marc Deltorn. The book was published this month in Belgium by Le Roy and Partners and it can be ordered here on my website or directly from the publisher leroypartners@telenet.be<mailto:leroypartners@telenet.be>
I am sure it will be a key non-toxic printmaking text for the French speaking market.

WORKSHOPS IN 2009

2.       Summer Workshops:
July 11th - July 19th 2009     and     August 1st - August 9th 2009

My summer workshops in my studio in Spain are already planned - you will find more information on my homepage www.artbag.dk<http://www.artbag.dk/> > grafisk eksperimentarium > workshops.
The workshops are attended by international printmakers. During the last 3 years the workshops have been attended by printmakers from Argentina, Mexico, United States, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, UK, Belgium, Holland, Germany, France, Andorra, Spain and Pakistan.

MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT

3.       New intaglio colours from AKUA
The range of AKUA waterbased intaglio colours has been increased with 6 new interesting colours:
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Pyrrole Orange
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Burnt Umber
  • Raw Umber
  • Diarylide Yellow

You can see a colour card and instructions on my homepage www.artbag.dk<http://www.artbag.dk/> > grafisk eksperimentarium > Shop.
I have all colours from AKUA in stock.

4.       New and practical equipment and materials for Non-Toxic Intaglio

From the very beginning of my research on Non-Toxic Intaglio I have been very concerned with finding and testing inexpensive materials, tools and equipment. Some are very difficult to find and with others, printmakers often feel uncertain if they work for our purpose. I have therefore decided to bring some new articles into my range of equipment and materials in my web shop: www.artbag.dk<http://www.artbag.dk/> > grafisk eksperimentarium > Shop > materials and equipment:

  • Transparent film for Ink Jet Printers (for halftones and continuous tones)
Transparent film for ink jet in bigger sizes is difficult to find nowadays. I have bought a bigger stock of Imperial Transjet Film in A3 size that I am selling in packets of 25 sheets. You will find it in my shop.

  • Handy silent compressor for air brush (aquatint)
Compressors occupy a lot of space; they are often very noisy and very expensive. The Airmaster Plus compressors comply with the demands of the printmaker making aquatints by means of an airbrush. I have tested this silent, small, light (3.1 kilo) and inexpensive compressor during my workshops with both the Badger 350 and the Badger Cresendo airbrush. The results were excellent. The max pressure is a constant blow of 55 PSI/3,79 BAR which is ideal for our purpose. It works together with any designer air brush. You will find it in my shop.

  • Rubber squeegee for wet lamination of photopolymer film - width 25 cm / 10 inches
During workshops and visits to many printmakers’ studios I have seen several models including wipers for windows, rubber palette knives for tiles etc. Since the rubber is either too soft or too hard there is a risk that you damage the film and you will definitely not be able to use enough pressure to press out the water between the film and the plate. The "Spekter" Squeegee is the answer. You will find it in my shop.

  • Painting Cushion/ Paint Pad - 8 x 8 cm/ 3.2 x 3.2 inches for developing photopolymer plates (solarplates)
I have seen printmakers using a sponge for developing solarplates. Even the softest sponge is too hard for this purpose - a soft  "painting cushion" or "paint pad" made of mohair (like those used by painters) is the answer to this problem. You will find it in my shop.

  • Good Quality Cutter Knives with 5 Spare Blades
A good quality cutting knife with a long blade is essential for trimming the edges of a photopolymer laminated plate in order to prevent black edges in the final print. You will find it in my shop.

  • Ink Spatula - Rubber Blade - width 5 cm / 2.4 inches
Ink spatulas made of rubber are essential when inking up the plate without damaging the image. You will find it in my shop.

  • Stripping Knives / Spatulas with stiff blades – width 23 mm / 1 inch
Slim spatulas in good quality are difficult to find. Essential for stirring and mixing inks in the can or on the glassplate. You will find it in my shop.
